Rachel Burke and Danny Jones Named Character Champions

It is with great pride that I am writing to congratulate SCC Lady Hawk  Rachel Burke (Cross Country / Track & Field) for her recognition by the Orange Empire Conference as co-recipient of the conference's 2012 Female "Character Champion" Award!!!

The OEC Character Champion Award is given annually to the Orange Empire Conference male and female student-athlete that best exhibit the high character traits of sportsmanship, respect, caring, fairness, civility, honesty, integrity, and responsibility. The annual award is sponsored by Fair-Play Scoreboards.

Rachel was initially selected by the SCC Athletic Department as the Santiago Canyon College Female "Character Champion" Award recipient for 2012.  Her recommendation was then sent forward for consideration amongst the pool of student-athlete Character Champion recipients from every college in the Orange Empire Conference (9 colleges).  She was selected along with Melanie Kashanchi (Basketball) of Irvine Valley College as the Co-Character Champions for this year.

I would also like to commend Daniel Jones (Track & Field) for his recognition by our athletic department as Santiago Canyon College's Male "Character Champion" Award recipient for 2012.

Running  Hawks Compete at ben Brown Invitational

Fullerton, CA - On Friday & Saturday, March 9th-10th, the Santiago Canyon College track & field team competed against a field of 22 universities and 15 community colleges at Cal State Fullerton’s Ben Brown Invitational.  The women’s team performance was highlighted by an SCC School Record in the 4x100m Relay.   Lady Hawks sprinters Ashley Garcia, Alicia Wright, Monique Cherry, and Eryka Morello combined to run the record time of 51.53 seconds and placed 11th overall in the invitational.  Other highlights included Garcia winning her heat in the 100 Meter Dash in 13.28 seconds (3rd fastest all-time for SCC) and Maranda Queja-Huff producing a lifetime best throw in the Javelin (74 feet 8 inches). 

 

The men’s team was again led by standout freshman thrower Daniel Jones who placed 9th overall amongst all collegiate competitors in the Discus (141 feet 0 inches).  A pair of heat winning performances were recorded in the sprints by sophomore Leonard “Trey” Stanley in the 400 Meter Dash (50.64 seconds) and freshman Blake Brewer in the 200 Meter Dash (23.73 seconds).  Sophomore thrower Sean Hunt also recorded a 1st place finish in his flight of the Hammer Throw with his lifetime best mark of 119 feet 11 inches.

SCC Hawks Compete at Long Beach Classic

Long Beach, CA - On Friday & Saturday, March 2nd-3rd, the Santiago Canyon College track & field team competed at the Long Beach State Classic.  The men’s team was led by freshman thrower Daniel Jones who broke the SCC School Record in the Discus (142 feet 2 inches) – improving upon the previous record by nearly 5 feet!  Additional highlights in the throwing events were provided by freshman Scott Shaffer who produced lifetime best performances in both the Hammer Throw (98 feet 10 inches) and Shot Put (35 feet 5 inches). 

The women’s team effort was led by the performances of freshman distance runner Lauren Olsen who followed upon season-best performances in the 800 Meters (2 minutes 38 seconds) & 1500 Meters (5 minutes 30 seconds) with an Orange Empire Conference leading performance in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase (12 minutes 41 seconds).  Other highlights included lifetime best performances by freshman heptathlete Eryka Morello in the 400 Meter Dash (66.29 seconds) and sophomore heptathlete Maranda Queja-Huff in the 100 Meter Hurdles (20.77 seconds), 200 Meter Dash (32.47 seconds), and 800 Meter Run (2 minutes 55.84 seconds).

Hawks Host Orange Coast

Santa Ana, CA - On Friday, March 11th, the Running Hawks hosted conference rival Orange Coast College in a dual meet held at Santa Ana College.  Both the men’s and women’s squads from SCC found themselves outmatched by the perennial track power and suffered lopsided losses to the Pirates.  The men’s team lost by a score of 42 points to 112 points while the women’s team lost by a score of 17 points to 131 points.  Despite the losses, numerous positive performances were posted by the Hawks as they established four new SCC School Records.  Freshman thrower Isaac Hernandez broke his own school records in both the Hammer Throw (128’-9”) and the Discus (127’-1”), improving those records by 10-feet and 6-feet respectively.  Freshman Colton Long tied the school record in the Pole Vault with his clearance of 11-feet.  And, the Women’s 4x400m Relay Team of Briana Lopez, Alicia Wright, Blanca Reyes, and Breanna Robles broke the previous school record by more than 3-seconds.  Highlights for the Lady Hawks also included Alicia Wright’s 1st place finish in the 200 Meter Dash and Briana Lopez running the 2nd fastest 100 Meter Dash time in SCC School History.  The most improved female athlete on the day was Valen Bohon who produced lifetime best performances in four events - Discus (16-foot improvement), Javelin (11-foot improvement), Shot Put (3-foot improvement), and the 200 Meter Dash (2-second improvement).  Highlights for the men’s team included lifetime best performances in the throws by Kevin Morgutia (improving 4-feet in the Shot Put & 10-feet in the Discus) and Sean Hunt (10-foot improvement in the Discus).  Freshman sprinter Matt Rhodes earned three 1st place finishes as he ran lifetime bests in the 400 Meter Dash (50.20 seconds, #2 all-time for SCC), 200 Meter Dash (22.73 seconds, #3 All-Time for SCC), and ran the fastest leg for the victorious men’s 4x400m Relay Team.  However, it was sophomore Team Captain Patrick Imfeld who was the most improved male athlete on the day as he recorded personal best performances in the 800 Meters (#3 All-Time for SCC at 1 minute 59.91 seconds), 200 Meter Dash, and the 4x400 Relay.

Hawk Run at Ben Brown Invitational

Fullerton, CA - On Saturday, March 5th, the Santiago Canyon College track & field team was represented by a select group of athletes at Cal State Fullerton’s Ben Brown Invitational.  The men’s team was led by freshman Isaac Hernandez who broke his own SCC School Record in the Shot Put with a recorded throw of 45 feet 1 inch.  Lifetime best performances were also recorded by thrower Sean Hunt in the Hammer (102 feet 11 inches) and middle distance runners Patrick Imfeld (2:00.82), Mason Hernandez (2:08.33), and Curtis Chase (2:19.87) in the 800 Meters.  The Lady Hawks were again led by freshman sprinter Alicia Wright who broke her own SCC School Records in both the 200 Meters and 400 Meters events with marks of 26.27 seconds and 58.44 seconds respectively.  Freshman heptathlete Maranda Queja also contributed a lifetime best performance in the 400 Meter Hurdles (89.63 seconds).

Hawks Compete Against Saddleback

Mission Viejo, CA - On Friday, February 25th, the SCC Running Hawks competed in an Orange Empire Conference track & field dual meet against host Saddleback College.  The men’s team competition was a close battle, but our Running Hawks came up short and walked away with a 68-to-86 loss to the Gauchos.  The Hawks dominated the jumping events in the meet as they record 1-2 sweeps in the Long Jump (Keith Woolley & Treyvon Cook) and the High Jump (Jesse Wilson & Matt Rhodes).  The Hawks also demonstrated their strength in the Middle Distance events as Rhodes won the 400 Meters event (50.64 seconds) and Mike Heranic won the 800 Meters event (2 minutes 10.67 seconds).  The men’s 4x100 meter relay team of Ibrahim Al-Arnous, Matt Rhodes, Keith Woolley, and Joseph Branker also earned a hard fought victory while establishing a new School Record of 43.01 seconds.  Individually, freshman thrower Isaac Hernandez established new SCC School Records in both the Shot Put (44 feet 2 inches) and the Hammer Throw (118 feet 9 inches), and sophomore javelin thrower Roberto Alatorre recorded the 2nd longest javelin throw in SCC team history (160 feet 0 inches).

 

The Lady Hawks were handed a significant defeat as Saddleback outscored them 114-to-30 in the women’s team competition.  Freshman sprinter Alicia Wright led the way for the Lady Hawks as she earned a victory in the 200 Meter Dash (26.68 seconds) and broke her own SCC School Record in the 100 Meter Dash with a new mark of 12.77 seconds.  The Lady Hawks’ only other individual 1st place finisher was freshman heptathlete Maranda Queja who recorded a throw of 70 feet 0 inches in the Javelin.  Other key contributors included Briana Lopez (who scored in the 200 Meters, 400 Meters, and on both Relay Teams) and Breanna Robles (who scored in the 800 Meters and the 4x400 Meter Relay).

Hawks Compete at Cerritos Invitational

Norwalk, CA - On Friday & Saturday, February 18-19, the Hawks track & field squads braved pouring rain to compete against a field of 21 community colleges at the 2-day Cerritos Invitational held at Cerritos College.  The men’s team was led by freshman Keith Woolley who recorded the 2nd furthest Long Jump in SCC team history (20 feet 10 inches) and placed 10th overall in the field of 50 jumpers.  Other Top-20 finishers included Patrick Imfeld in the 1500 meters (14th place with a time of 4:17.56), Ibrahim Al-Arnous in the 100 Meter Dash (14th place with a time of 11.56 seconds), and Isaac Hernandez in the Shot Put (18th place with a throw of 40 feet 1 inch).  Three SCC School Records were broken in the meet.  Both the men’s and the women’s 4x800m Relay Teams broke school records.  The men’s relay team comprised of Imfeld, William Vetter, Mike Heranic, and Stephen Lawrence destroyed the previous record by more than a minute with their time of 8 minutes 39.94 seconds.  The women’s relay team of Blanca Reyes, Rachel Burke, Breanna Robles, and Francisca Garcia ran a time of 11 minutes 31.89 seconds which shaved nearly 3 seconds off the previous SCC women’s record in the event.  The third SCC School Record was recorded by standout freshman sprinter Alicia Wright in the 400 Meter Dash.  Wright’s time of 59.35 seconds represented a near 3-second improvement over the previous SCC team record, and was good enough to place her 4th overall in the highly talented field of competitors.

Hawks Open Conference at Santa Ana

Santa Ana, CA - On Friday, February 11th, The Running Hawks of Santiago Canyon College opened their 2011 track & field season with an Orange Empire Conference double dual meet against the teams from Riverside and Santa Ana.  The men’s team was dealt a lopsided 135-to-19 loss to the 3-time defending State Champions from Riverside.  Freshman sprinter Joseph Branker was the top performer for the Hawks as he established new SCC School Records in both the 200 Meter Dash (22.13 seconds) and the 400 Meter Dash (49.28 seconds).  The SCC Throwers also produced some outstanding marks with a pair of SCC School Records being broken by Isaac Hernandez in the Shot Put (40’-10”) and Miguel Eizenga in the Hammer Throw (118’-8”).  The distance running core was led by sophomore William Vetter who placed third (1 minute 58.19 seconds) in an exciting 800 Meter event that required a photo-finish to separate the top-3 competitors.

The women’s team recorded losses to both Riverside (137-to-10) and Santa Ana (73-to-58).  Freshman sprinter Alicia Wright was the top point scorer for the Lady Hawks as she shattered SCC School Records in both the 100 Meter Dash (12.91 seconds) and the 200 Meter Dash (26.41 seconds).  Wright led a strong sprint contingent for the Lady Hawks who recorded 1-2 sweeps against Santa Ana in the 100 Meters, 200 Meters, 400 Meters, and 400 Meter Hurdles events.  Freshman distance runner Rachel Burke was another strong individual performer for the team as she ran the 3rd fastest 3000 Meter time (12 minutes 16.11 seconds) in SCC team history and anchored the women’s 4x400 Meter Relay squad to the 5th fastest time (4 minutes 45.00 seconds) in team history.

Hawks Compete in Decathlon

Costa Mesa, CA - On Thursday & Friday, March 18-19, the Santiago Canyon College track & field team was represented by freshman Jessica Aguilera and sophomore Zachary Pio at the Orange Empire Conference Multi-Events Championship.  Aguilera competed in the 7-event Heptathlon competition - placing 3rd overall and scoring 3,368 points (surpassing the previous SCC School Record by 441 points).  Aguilera recorded lifetime best performances in the 200 Meters (28.85 seconds), 800 Meters (2 minutes 40 seconds), and Shot Put (30 feet 6 inches) during the course of the 2-day competition.  Pio competed in the 10-event Decathlon competition – earning a 2-day total of 4,263 points to place 15th overall in the conference.  Highlights for Pio included a throw of 157 feet 8 inches in the Javelin and a lifetime best of 5 minutes 11 seconds in the 1500 Meter Run.  Both student-athletes will advance in these events to the Southern California Regional Championships being hosted by Cerritos College on April 13th & 14th.

Hawks Host Fullerton

Santa Ana, CA - On Friday, March 12th, the Santiago Canyon College track & field teams hosted a dual meet against conference rival Fullerton College.  The men’s team competition was a close battle, but our Running Hawks came up short and walked away with a 64-to-88 loss to the Hornets.  The Hawks dominated the sprinting events in the meet.  The men’s 4x100 meter relay team of Huy Nguyen, Anthony Privitelli, John Privitelli, and Stanley Leonard earned the victory while also establishing a new School Record of 43.26 seconds.  The team also scored 1-2 sweeps in the 100 Meter Dash, 400 Meter Dash, 400 Meter Hurdles, and Shot Put events.  Individually, Huy Nguyen tied the SCC School Record in the 100 Meter Dash with his time of 10.95 seconds, Leonard Stanley bettered his own School Record with his time of 22.41 seconds in the 200 Meter Dash, and Brian Berkley established a new School Record in the Shot Put with his throw of 37 feet 7 inches.  Other individual event winners included William Vetter in the 800 Meters, Steven Harris in the 400 Meter Hurdles, and Zachary Pio in the Javelin.

The Lady Hawks were handed a significant defeat as Fullerton outscored them 110-to-33 in the women’s team competition.  Jessica Aguilera led the way for the Lady Hawks as she earned victories in the High Jump and Long Jump.  Aguilera also shattered the School Record in the 100 Meter Hurdles by more than a half second – finishing in 2nd place with a time of 17.24 seconds.  Other key contributors included Karly Weeks who won the 400 Meter Dash, Sabine Slattery who placed 2nd in the 3000 Meter Run, and Kelly Kiskadden who placed 2nd in the Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin events.

SCC Run at Ben Brown Invite

Fullerton, CA - On Saturday, March 6th, the Santiago Canyon College track & field team was represented by a select group of athletes at Cal State Fullerton’s Ben Brown Invitational.  The men’s team was led by freshman Leonard “Trey” Stanley who recorded 1st place finishes in his heats of both the 200 Meter Dash (22.81 seconds) and the 400 Meter Dash (51.73 seconds).  Freshman middle distance runner Patrick Imfeld also recorded a heat victory in the 800 Meters with his lifetime best time of 2:04.11.  Second place heat finishes were recorded by William Vetter (400 Meter Dash), Jonathan Morales (400 Meter Dash), and the 4x400 Meter Relay team of Leonard, Morales, Steven Harris, and David Ferreira.  The women’s competition was highlighted by the performances of the Lady Hawks in the three hurdle events.  Sabine Slattery was the top distance runner for the Lady Hawks as she battled through intense pouring rain to record the 6th fastest time in school history in the Steeplechase (14 minutes 32 seconds).  Jessica Aguilera ran 18.10 seconds in the 100 Meter Hurdles (2nd fastest all-time for SCC) and 75.52 seconds in the 400 Meter Hurdles (5th fastest all-time for SCC).  Aguilera also broke her own School Record in the Javelin with her mark of 110 feet 9 inches.

Hawks Compete Against Pirates

Costa Mesa, CA - On Friday, February 26th, the Running Hawks competed in an Orange Empire Conference track & field dual meet against host Orange Coast College.  Both the men’s and women’s squads from SCC found themselves outmatched against the Pirates and suffered lopsided losses to the perennial track power.  The men’s team lost by a score of 15 points to 139 points, while the Lady Hawks lost by a score of 19 points to 131 points.  Sophomore Zachary Pio and freshman Leonard Stanley led the men’s team in scoring.  Pio earned the team’s only individual victory on the day as he took 1st place in the Javelin with a School Record throw of 168 feet 11.25 inches.  Pio also placed 3rd in the High Jump.  Stanley placed 2nd overall in both the 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash.  Other notable performances included a School Record throw of 97 feet 4.75 inches by Miguel Eizenga in the Hammer Throw, and 3rd place finishes by Jonathan Morales in the Triple Jump and Patrick Imfeld in the 800 Meters.  The Lady Hawks were led by sophomore thrower Kelly Kiskadden who placed 1st in the Discus, 2nd in the Shot Put and Hammer Throw, and 3rd in the Javelin.  Kiskadden’s mark of 67 feet 6.25 inches in the Hammer Throw bettered her own SCC School Record in that event.  Freshman Jessica Aguilera also set a School Record with her throw of 109 feet 8.5 inches in the Javelin.  Aguilera also scored with 3rd place finishes in the High Jump and the 400 Meter Dash.  Freshman Sabine Slattery completed the scoring effort for the Lady Hawks with her 3rd place finish in the 400 Meter Hurdles.

Hawks Open Track & Field Season

Riverside, CA - On Friday, February 8th, the Santiago Canyon Track & Field Teams opened there season with a conference tri-meet against Santa Ana and hosting college Riverside.

 

The men’s team was dealt a lopsided 143-to-11 loss to the 2-time defending State Champions from Riverside.  Freshman thrower Brian Berkley was the top performer for the Hawks as he established new SCC School Records in the Discus (122’-2”) and the Hammer (92’-1”). 

 

The sprinters were led by freshman speedster Leonard Stanley who broke the SCC School Record in the 200 Meter Dash (22.63 seconds) and ran the 2nd fastest time in SCC school history in the 100 Meters (11.15 seconds – which also ranked as the 6th fastest time in the state during this past week).

Hawks Struggle Against Conference Rivals

 

 

 

 

Costa Mesa, CA - The Santiago Canyon College (SCC) track and field teams competed against against Fullerton College and meet host Orange Coast College (OCC) in a double dual meet at the OCC Track.

Both the men’s and women’s squads from SCC found themselves outmatched as they suffered lopsided losses to both of these conference rivals.   The men’s team lost by a score of 124-to-26 against Fullerton and a score of 149-to-5 against Orange Coast.

The highlight for the men’s team was the establishment of a new SCC school record in the 4x400 meter relay. Sophomore Sam Morales (52.16 seconds) and freshmen Mylon Nixon (51.09), Jon Morales (54.22) and Adam Hyde (54.66) combine to break the previous record by nearly an entire second with their combined time of 3:32.13.

Other outstanding performances included personal bests by Brian Becker (400 meters), Richard Huerta (javelin & discus), Jon Morales (triple jump), Sam Morales (800 meters), Zachary Pio (high jump & pole vault) and Arnulfo Vasquez (3000 meters).

The women’s team lost by scores of 117-to-26 against Fullerton and 148-to-6 against Orange Coast. Highlights included personal best performances by Angela Alvarez (400 meters & long jump), Sara Bartlett (high jump – third best in SCC history) and Lauren Fortelny (javelin–second best in SCC history).
